Talk:One Rep Max 1RM
From TurboCASH Wiki
You put the argument with a great deal of eloquence, which from my limited verbal abilities and even more limited Squating abilities (180kgs) it is hard to take you on. I will have to concede on the 1 RM, and promise never to bring it up again - I can see clearly that it is important. I think spending too much time with rugby players is starting to soften me. Most players can actually get through whole games without a full frontal contact., but that is just it - they get through. They always have some means of avoiding the contact. They will go as far as to turn their backs on the attackers, and run along side hoping to jump onto the bus as it comes past. "Getting into the hitting position?" - no kidding the last time I saw this at Newlands was Corne Krige and Faan Rautenbach.
Things are really bad here in the Western Cape where "pretending to care about the jersey' is actually one of the most sort after attributes. I actually see players of the highest level run so fast that they intentionally over pursue so as to avoid contact. This pressure to "appear" like you are trying is so intense that it completely overrides technique. A horrendous example of this is Peter Grant who started the year as an absolutely superb defender, but has got worse as the years has progressed. This came to a head in Christchurch, playing for the Springboks, where the video replay shows him on multiple occasions simply diving into thin air nowhere near the play.
Right so this is what I need to do:
1) Convince players that they need to gym 4 times per week, 50 weeks a year.
2) Deal with coaches that have been coaching for 20 years, but still believe that weight training messes up your coordination.
3) Deal with Bio Keneticists that have PhD s and still believe it is better to play rugby at age 16 with a rubber neck than it is to do real weight training.
4) Convince Muggles that there is simply no substitute for running straight up to someone and smashing him backwards onto his butt. All these ideas of running around people are the dreams of flower sellers. "Running into space" is like "laughing all the way to the bank" - can only be talked about by people that have never actually tried it.
5) Convince administrators that if they invest 2 years into a core of black players, they will create monsters from the dark side.
