The 3 Point Stance

Inside our 22 or whenever we expect them to Pick and Drive, adopt a 3 point or goal line stance. This stance will allow the Defender to come out firing low and hard. In more relaxed situations (if you beleive they exist in Rugby) use the Linebacker Stance.

Defending the shoulder of the Ruck.

  • Always be lower than the runner.
  • Hit him upwards and backwards.
  • Every inch conceded here turns into 5 inches out wide.
  • Prepare for a power Step with the aim of maximum impact.
  • We are going to make him "Spill" the Ball.

  • In Pic - Breakdown is to the Players Left
  • Inside leg is forward
  • Closer to the Ruck More Square
  • Further from the Ruck more staggered
  • In preparation, stick out chest, stick out butt
  • Result is a straight Back
  • Weight pushing forward on Toes
  • Inside hand is up, could be bound to allow "creep" beyond the line of last feet
  • Head is up, keeps arch in the back

Power Step Inside

If the play come to the inside, pick and drive or roll away from the Ruck.

  • The inside leg is forward.
  • Head up eyes on attack
  • If we get hit before we move, this rocks us inwards
  • If we get a chance our first step is inwards

  • Contact will be with the Outside Soulder and driven by the Outside Leg.
  • At worst we push the runner back into the breakdown, using it an obstruction to his movement.

Small Step to the Outside

If the play come to the outside (Channel 1)

  • Take a small step with the outside foot and drive forward.

Big step to the Outside

  • Cross over the inside leg
  • Swing outside Arminwards to counter balance

(Pic Required)

Ball Goes Out wide

  • Rip the outside hand to the outside (Shake Hands to the outside)
  • SmallStep with Outside Foot in direction of play
  • Move outwards into Linebacker role.
